Milestone moment as Mother's Union celebrates 150 years

Blackburn Diocese Mother's Union has an all-age local celebration to mark the 150th anniversary of the worldwide organisation on August 8.

On that day they will hold a magnificent exhibition in Blackburn Cathedral showcasing the work of the Mothers’ Union in Lancashire, nationally and worldwide as its members seek to put their faith into action. All are welcome to attend!

There will also be lots of activities for children (accompanied by an adult); all taking place in the Crypt.

The main attraction will be the display of around 50 deanery and branch banners.

Some are the banners are very old, while others are quite modern, but all are splendid examples of the skill and vision of those who designed and made them.

Exhibits will also draw attention to the campaigns taken up by the Mother's Union to raise awareness of domestic abuse and modern-day slavery whilst others will provide examples of the outreach work undertaken to support hospitals, prisons and refuges.

The day will reach a conclusion with a service from 2pm until 3pm to remember and give thanks for the founder Mary Sumner and her legacy today.

This will be led by Rt Rev Philip North, Bishop of Blackburn. The Lord Lieutenant is attending the service along with the Mayor and Mayoress of Blackburn with Darwen and the York Provincial MU President.

The day promises to be an opportunity to experience the friendship and fellowship enjoyed by all members in their branches across the Diocese.

Anyone interested in attending any part of the day is welcome and new members of the Mother's Union are also encouraged - just ask when you are there for more information.
