Dr Rowan Williams at St Silas’ Church, Blackburn

There will be a very special visitor to the Diocese of Blackburn on Tuesday 19 September.

Bishop Julian already has the date firmly in his diary for when Dr Rowan Williams, former Archbishop of Canterbury, comes to St Silas Parish Church in Blackburn, to talk about his life and work in the Christian Faith.

Dr Williams, now a Life Baron in the House of Lords as Baron Williams of Oystermouth since 2013, resigned his position of Archbishop of Canterbury in 2010 after 10 years in the post, to become Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge.

Although, in general, his theology is orthodox, and nurtured by anglo-Catholicism, he has been regarded by some as a radical; he has been a strong advocate for women Bishops and has supported a more accepting attitude to LGBT people and priests in the Church.

He speaks or reads several languages, including Russian (learnt in 6 months!) and is married to Jane, a lecturer in theology, daughter of the Rt Rev Geoffrey Paul, former Bishop of Bradford and a highly respected evangelical leader.
