How much do we understand the origins of marriage in our own culture and how it has changed over time? How much less do we know about marriage in other cultures?

This event, organised by Near Neighbours and Lancashire Forum of Faiths for Inter Faith week, is intended to explore the role and purpose of marriage in different faith traditions, looking at both the theological basis and the social practice.

The format is for members of a panel, made up of people of different faiths, to give a brief outline of marriage in their own traditions, followed by informal discussion in groups around a set of questions.

Further issues raised in these discussions will then be addressed by the panel, which will be chaired by John Chitham, the Bishop's chaplain.

There will be:

  • An exhibition area - to which we would like people to to contribute wedding dresses/attire, Copies of photos, stories and other memorabilia
  • A food tasting area - wedding cake/cheesecake/sweets/etc
  • A Mendhi - with henna
  • A Jewish Wedding Canopy
  • Try on a Sari
  • Make Button Holes
  • Talkeoke - discussion round table to encourage people to share wedding stories and practices
  • Catwalk - a chance to wear bridal wear from Wedding Belles/Poshaqs and see if it fits their own wedding attire
  • Music

The event is already supported by M&S, Meena Bakery, BWD Council, Lancashire Care Network, Action Factory, Hummraz and other bodies.

In the evening we have a more faith based discussion event  - The meaning of Marriage and Faith to which we would like to have a Jewish representative on the panel.

The format would be a ten minutes talk from each panellist followed by break out groups with a panellist and facilitator to encourage a more open discussion and think of questions for the panel at the end.

The event will be from 6.30pm to 8.30pm

Tickets for The Meaning Of Marriage can be found here
