Bishops' statement of support for The Great Together in memory of Jo Cox MP

The Bishops of The Church of England in Lancashire issued a statement of encouragement today to everyone taking part in The Great Get Together this weekend in memory of murdered MP Jo Cox.

The Great Get Together will involve thousands of people in community gatherings across the North West, UK and even internationally on June 16-18 and has been coordinated by The Jo Cox Foundation and The Big Lunch organisation.

Rt Rev Julian Henderson, Bishop of Blackburn; Rt Rev Geoff Pearson, Bishop of Lancaster and Rt Rev Philip North, Bishop of Burnley said: “The murder of Batley and Spen MP Jo Cox was a shocking and troubling moment in the life of our nation.

“It was an attempt to divide communities and to undermine democracy, but the response to the murder in the year since it happened has shown the British people will not be intimidated by such cowardly acts.

“We have prayed God’s Kingdom values of justice, love and peace and the Gospel of Jesus Christ might transform the hearts of people who would sow hatred and fear and we should also commit ourselves afresh to action to building a world that reflects those values and shares that Gospel.

“As Jo Cox herself said in her first speech to Parliament: ‘we are far more united and have far more in common than that which divides us’.

“The Great Get Together will shine a bright and positive light to put a moment of darkness into perspective and we hope everyone taking part in events this weekend has a great time but they also take a moment to remember Jo Cox and reflect on why they are participating.”
