Introduction: Diocesan Communications Manager Ronnie Semley MCIPR; DipCIPR

I’m Ronnie Semley, the Diocesan Communications Manager. I have worked in the media and communications industry for 30 years. In the years immediately prior to joining the Diocese I spent 11 years at Bolton Council where I was Communications and Media Manager and also the NHS Leadership Academy in Leeds as Programme Lead: Corporate Communications.
I am a long-term Member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR); hold the CIPR Diploma in Public Relations and have held CIPR Accredited Practitioner status for more than 10 years.
My current role encompasses all the major communications needs of the Diocesan Bishop as well as communications support and advice for the other senior clergy and the senior staff. I am a member of the Bishop’s Leadership Team.

- proactive media relations; media and reputation management
- internal communications
- online communications, including social media channels
- support for large-scale Diocesan-wide events, for example Crossroads Mission in September 2016
- editing and production of The See, the monthly Diocesan magazine
- production of other key publications such as the annual Parish Share booklet
- brand management – for the Diocesan logo and the Vision 2026 branding
- communications advice and training - in 2016 training I led included social media basics; 'Get Your Church Noticed'; and communications awareness advice delivered to Deanery chapters
I provide principally reactive communications support for the Diocesan Board of Education; Cidari Multi-Academy Trust and Blackburn Cathedral as and when required.
I can arrange to feature your church activities and events in the Diocesan magazine ‘The See’ which is distributed across the Diocese. Please email any contributions to firstname.lastname@example.org, make sure they are in an unformatted Word file and try to make your contributions around 50-100 word ideally due to restrictions on space. I also circulate all stories featured in The See and in the events calendar in a ‘story bundle’ to all local media every month to further assist parishes with promotion of local events.
To further enhance the profile of the Diocese, its parishes and schools, I encourage you to build your own relationships with your local newspaper and any other local media in your area and to pass on stories about the day-to-day activities in your church directly to them. If you think you have a story of regional or possibly even national interest I will be happy to discuss it with you and, if it is suitable for a wider audience, I will work directly with you on the publicity.
In addition, in the unlikely event you should have a crisis of any kind in your church which could spark the attention of regional or national media, then I will be on hand to support.
