Parish Development

Parish Development was set up with the aim of working with parishes in a supportive way, helping them to engage within their community in terms of the 5 Marks of Mission:

  • To proclaim the news of the Kingdom
  • To respond to human needs by loving service
  • To teach, baptise and nurture new believers
  • To seek to transform unjust structures of society
  • To strive to safeguard creation and to sustain and renew the life of the earth
 The Parish Development team includes
  • Diocesan Missioner - The Rev David Banbury
  • Departmental Secretary - Miranda Wraithmell
  • Parish Development Resources Officer - Stephanie Rankin
  • Parish Development Officer - Vacant
  • A team of parish based Mission Companions

The aims of the Parish Development team are:

  1. To look at new ways of the church engaging in the local community and meeting its spiritual needs, therefore to have a vision that relates to the needs of this generation and the next
  2. Seek to work with parishes, encouraging and enabling them as well as providing new tools to facilitate effective mission in the community
  3. Be fully supportive of the MAP process and aim to provide resources to enable and support parishes to deliver their mission strategy in relation to the community. There will be an emphasis on creating a servant-heart ministry for mission
  4. Work alongside incumbents and lay leaders to look at ways in which they can further resource and encourage parishes to engage in issues relating to community
  5. Recruit and train a team of volunteers within the area of Parish Development who work with parishes throughout the diocese
  6. Work with parishes at creating a vision for the church that relates to the community it serves.

The Parish Development Team are involved in the following:

  • Working alongside many churches running PCC Away Days
  • Supporting churches through the MAP process including identifying the tools needed to implement their MAP
  • Helping churches to engage with their community by running community events
  • Conducting parish audits and helping churches map the resources in their community
  • Advising in other areas related to church growth, evangelism, outreach and other mission work

One of the main pieces of work within Parish Development is to help churches discover who and what they are for this present generation. Parish Development works alongside the Diocesan Missioner, the Children’s Worker for the diocese and the diocese Youth Officer in helping churches to engage in mission and outreach.

To help develop the work we have set up Mission Companions whose role is to work with churches over a period of time, walking with them in their journey in mission and outreach. This team has been put together from all traditions and churchmanship and runs purely on a supportive model, based on Community Engagement; Church Development and Theological Reflection.
