In January the Fresh Expressions mission shaped ministry course is starting in the diocese. See: www.freshexpressions.org.uk/missionshapedministry. This is a one year, part time course, and aims to equip both lay people and clergy to start fresh expressions of church in their own context.
We think msm is unique in a number of ways:
- It is a course which is quickly gaining national recognition here in the UK (Norwich, Lincoln, Exeter and Chelmsford all started in early 07; Sheffield, West Midlands, and Merseyside all started this month. At least another ten areas, planning towards an 2008 start, and we also have interest from Canada and the USA). 60-80 average on each course.
- It is designed for both clergy and lay people and we believe there is great advantage in them learning side by side, especially if a team from a local church or group of churches is involved.
- It is designed with two tracks in mind: an academic, validated track for the minority; a practical track for the majority.
- It offers mission mentoring during the course and for a year afterwards
- It helps establish mission learning networks beyond the life of the course
- It is based on a threefold philosophy of studying, going back to the local context and doing, returning to the course and reflecting.
